The herdsman’s comment that the Corinthian is working “differently” probably refers obliquely to his perception that while the one is working to suppress the truth, the other is endeavoring to bring it out. From the audience’s perspective, however, this difference is of limited significance, for it is aware that both men have a role to play in realizing the divine project. Indeed, the god has been employing both without their knowledge. Oidipous, by contrast, has been made to serve the god’s purpose after having been informed by the Oracle of the role he was to play and despite his then having dug in his heels and committed himself to a life-long resistance to the prophecy’s realization. He would presumably have done better—he certainly would have eased the god’s burden—had he knowingly and willingly cooperated with the god. [Dnc] [Mw] This approach is in fact always open to individuals and cities; they have only to seek clarification from the god himself through his authorized institutional representative at Delphi.
