In hearing Oidipous suggest ruling briefly over hope, the audience will be reminded that there is no hope for him; in this respect he is deluded, [Mpei] but he is also deluded about the powers of reason, [Mpea] for his deductions depend upon the scant information provided by the lone witness, who was terrified. Any deductions based upon his account may well also be false. [Mpew] Between the sole survivor’s terror and Oidipous’s hope, the audience can already see that little insight is to be gained.
