Oidipous complains that the cloud of darkness came without a spoken warning (ἄφατον). He is forgetting the φάτις he received at Delphi; can he not see that it may have been just such a warning? Indeed, his ignorance was such that he regarded it as a threat when in fact it was an instruction that might have saved him from much of the terror and grief that are now his to experience.
