When the Chorus exclaims at the “terrible things” that Oidipous has done, this again raises the question, just which deeds it recognizes to be terrible. The self-blinding is awful, and the parricide, regicide, and incest are loathsome, but the audience will have learned to recognize that all these errors stem from Oidipous’s improper response to the Oracle, especially his decision to counteract the god’s word.
