Oidipous believes himself to be acting in aid of the country he polluted. Is it not rather the case that in claiming to seek vengeance for the country that he long ago polluted, he continues to pollute it now, for while he believes himself to be exacting vengeance on behalf of the god, the audience, knowing that the vengeance he exacts will find its way straight to him, must see that it is the god who is acting, not he. This makes it apparent that Oidipous believes the god to be incapable of rendering justice on his own. Are these not grounds for him to be made by the god to exact justice on himself?
