Oidipous may intend his self-description as “supremely daring” (παντλήμων) to highlight his suffering, but it also carries a more critical connotation, namely, his willingness to vie with the Apollo. [Gd] [P] [Mp] In daring to challenge prophecy and the god who authorizes it, Athens is similarly supreme.
