Oidipous’s wish that Kreon might meet with (εὐτυχοίης) good luck, success, prosperity flies in the face of the knowledge that Oidipous should by now have acquired that luck plays no determining role in success, prosperity, and well-being. That which appears to be chance in fact serves as a pathway for divine intervention in service of justice—a mortal’s reward or punishment for cooperation with or resistance to the god in accommodating necessity.
