The invocation to “come” expresses in words the spirit of the people’s supplication with which this play’s action began; it also restates the invocation to “appear” two lines prior. The audience, which may just minutes ago have been skeptical of the god’s response to these invocations, now knows that the god, inhabiting Oidipous’s body and speaking through his mouth, has both come and manifested himself; he has answered the invocation and he is now working to bring to a conclusion an action already well underway.
