“Unnumbered” (άνάριθμος) echoes the expression with which the foregoing strophe began (ἀνάριθμα), as “dies” (ὄλλυται) completes the idea begun with “falls ill” ten lines before. The cause of this city’s death is unclear; perhaps the reasons are those that were brought up directly or indirectly in the previous strophe: warfare and rapidly-spreading disease. As both these causes and many of the images associated with them accord with the Athenian reality, the horrors now lamented by the Chorus would be very nearly those felt in Athens. [Gt-a] [Mw]
