The singling out of Ares as a god “set apart from honor” raises the question: by whom? Images of fire and torch link Apollo, Artemis, and Dionysos to Ares and suggest that all four of these gods are acting similarly and perhaps in consort with one another. Since Apollo offered Sparta unbidden divine aid in the anticipated war with Athens, it can be inferred that the other gods, including the gods of war and theater, might be acting together with Apollo. Athens, then, would be the one to whom honor is being denied. [Ap] [Mw] [P]
