Oidipous knows himself to be of some other country, but he does not know himself to be Laios’ killer, and so even as he vastly narrows the field of potential killers, he continues to exclude himself from consideration. The audience, on the other hand, knows him not even to be of another country. His false assumption limits his considerations even as his ignorance might further them. False assumptions, at least in this instance, overpower ignorance. His limitations make success in finding Laios’ killer seem a more remote possibility. [Mea] [Mei]
