Will gratitude await him on any level? When Oidipous discovers himself to be Laios’ killer and the source of Thebes’ pollution, will he feel grateful to himself for discovering it? Will he feel grateful to the god for leading him to the discovery? But more important, will the god be grateful to this man who consistently obscures him, fails to hear him, and diminishes his importance? Since the revelation must come despite Oidipous, rather than thanks to him, can thanks reasonably be expected? The god might thank and reward those who serve him more humbly and deferentially.
