Oidipous’s word “inconsequential” (ἀτελεύτητος) means more than Oidipous realizes; he now sees the prophet as serving and protecting only his own interests. But if Teiresias’ss silence, like his speech, serves the god, and the god is now contriving the revelation that Oidipous has fulfilled the prophecies he has tried so assiduously to avoid, then the god and the god’s agents will prove absolutely consequential.
