Replying that he would not go “too far” in his speech—οὐκ ἂν πέρα φράσαιμι—Teiresias implies that there is a line that he should not cross. And the audience might by now well understand that the god has drawn that line. In acknowledging this limitation upon his freedom, however, Teiresias provides the audience with insight providing for an answer to the question presently on its mind, for if the man who is best informed about divine intentions allows the god to set limits upon his actions, it should follow that other men, too, ought to subject their actions to divinely-set limitations. If prophecy is the conduit by which the god can instruct men, then it is also the medium by which individuals and cities can discover the limitations to which they are subject. [Mp] [Mi] [Dncc]
