“Accomplishing (εἰργάσθαι) the deed” was (and apparently continues to be) precisely Oidipous’s role: the god communicated the necessity of Oidipous’s killing his father to the Pythia who passed it to Oidipous, who carried it out. The irony is that where Oidipous implicitly accuses the seer of acting at his own discretion in full knowledge, the seer had nothing at all to do with the commission of the deed and speaks at the god’s discretion, while Oidipous insisted upon acting on his own impulse but without awareness that he was accomplishing the prophecy he had received. Oidipous’s present speech demonstrates his service as an unwitting medium for the god; his past action demonstrates his service as the god’s unwilling agent. [Apcmu] [Apamu] [Mpe]
