The subject of breeding and nurture implied by “fostered” (τρέφῃ) cannot but again remind the audience of Oidipous’s incestuous breeding—his taking birth from and then spawning new life in one and the same woman. Applied to Teiresias, on the other hand, the audience may suppose that Teiresias’s blindness is an aspect of his divine gift and was therefore fostered by the god who, through Teiresias and the Oracle, foresaw and foretold the improper fosterings in which Oidipous would be involved.
