Claiming now to have said what he came to say, Teiresias makes a direct contradiction of everything he has said on the subject to this point, for he earlier insisted that he did not come of his own volition and preferred to say nothing about the matter on which he was summoned. If he is not wont to make false statements, there must be a sense in which these contradictory views can be reconciled. Such a reconciliation accords with a rather more complex understanding of intention and realization, truth and falsehood, especially when a god is one of the parties to the conversation and the actions that support it. The god is an active agent, but not a controlling agent. Even those willing to serve the god must work hard to discover the god’s will and then act with sensitivity and flexibility to contribute to its realization. During the preceding interview Teiresias seems to have continually kept his internal eye on the god while carefully gauging Oidipous’s responses and preparing his next speech in consideration of both.
