When it has an object (in the genitive) χηρεύων means to be deprived of, to lack. Without an object, it can mean “to be a widower,” “live in solitude, of a fugitive.” The bull lives in solitude and is a fugitive. How, however, are these qualities analogs for Oidipous? He is presently lacking nothing. He is at the center of his community. He sleeps with his wife. If he is a fugitive, this is not yet known to him. The bull presents the image of an unseen reality that will soon manifest itself; it is an insight. Like a prophecy, it strips away the outer surface of appearance to reveal the image of a truer state of affairs. [Gd] [Apcma]
