Calling Kreon a “thief” (λῃστής) of his political power, Oidipous echoes the earlier discussion he had with Kreon, in which Kreon called Laios’ killer(s) λῃσταί (plural; l. 122), which Oidipous then himself converted to the singular (l. 124). It is he, not Kreon, who has played the part of the highwayman. It is he, not Kreon, who has usurped another man’s power; he could well be speaking for his murdered father. Oidipous is not, then, as he himself thinks, complaining of an outrage he only supposes was done to him by Kreon, but of one he actually did to his father.
