Oidipous is wrong: Kreon is neither ill-disposed nor grievous towards him. But what, the audience might wonder, of Apollo—he does seem intent upon causing Oidipous grievous harm. Is this, too, a misperception? With a firm basis for presuming the god’s ill disposition towards itself, Athens would have been sympathetic to Oidipous. Yet, as reasonable as the inference of divine animosity may seem to be, the parallel with Kreon’s perceived animosity suggests that Athens may be misjudging Apollo. How this is possible remains to be seen. [Mpea] [Mpei] [Ad]
