Realizing that Oidipous is not only wrong about him, but stubbornly unwilling to give the matter proper consideration leads Kreon to characterize his brother-in-law’s state of mind as “self-will” (αὐθαδία), a good trait, but one that demands the application of good sense or mindfulness (νοῦ), which in his view Oidipous lacks. Oidipous is not thinking clearly due to an unshakeable faith in his own views and judgments, which renders his αὐθαδία problematic. Instead of applying thoughtfulness to the situation, Oidipous is letting his convictions direct his thoughts. He is judging both what is reasonable and what is good by his personal beliefs and attitudes. The apparent corrective: careful and sympathetic consideration of other points of view. [Md] [Mpea]
