Given the audience’s highly developed sensitivity to double entendre in the very word χρῄζεις (cf. m365.1), this question yields a variant reading: (Kreon) “What in fact do you foretell?” While the audience has become aware that Oidipous has nearly continuously been speaking for the god, the double entendre now seems to express an explicit invitation to Oidipous to prophesy. The god seems to be speaking through Kreon to prepare for divine speech through Oidipous. There may be a parallel between this phenomenon and the way that a consultation at Delphi is effected through a collaboration involving the Pythia, the priest or priests who mediate for her, and the petitioner, who must formulate appropriate questions.
