Disagreeing with Oidipous’s proposition that a ruler must always be obeyed, Kreon shifts to the active voice, which has the effect of changing from consideration of universal to particular. He must believe there to be a criterion by which individual rulers can be judged, and while he does not state what it is, the audience has just discovered what it might be: submission to a higher power. At an earlier impasse Kreon suggested that Oidipous consult Teiresias, by which he can be taken to have meant: Apollo. Now that Oidipous contests the seer’s integrity, however, this avenue for conflict resolution is no longer available, and there seems to be nowhere else to go for help in finding a reasonable resolution to the problem.
