The Chorus hesitates to correct Iokaste’s incorrect supposition that Oidipous and Kreon are equal parties to the strife, perhaps because this would require tracing the dispute to Teiresias’s declaration that Oidipous killed Laios. The audience will infer that the Chorus is nervous about even suggesting to Iokaste that her present husband murdered her late husband. The Thebans’ reticence to communicate this puts their weakness on display and shows how it contributes to the problem. It also makes it clear that, even though the gods must be supposed already to be engaged in revealing the facts surrounding Oidipous, Laios, Iokaste and prophecy, these will not easily be revealed to Oidipous.
