Rather than developing an extended philosophical discussion in support of her thesis, Iokaste promises “shortcuts” (σύντομα) to understanding. Yet, if this word is read as double entendre, Apollo can be heard to promise a quick path to the conclusion that the gods do indeed have a “share” in the mortal sphere. Indeed, that evidence has already been presented, such as when Apollo was heard to point at Oidipous’s predilection to exempt himself from charges of wrong-doing and when he reversed the polarity of Iokaste’s statement that “nothing mortal has a share in prophetic arts.” The god has already won the competition for concision, for he has given his evidence even before she can introduce hers.
