Again separating the god from prophetic speech, Iokaste piously avers: “what the god has need to track (ἐρευνᾷ) he will himself with ease reveal.” “Track” repeats the word ἐξερευνᾶν heard at l. 258, when the god enlisted Oidipous’s help by instructing him to hunt down Laios’ killer. Contrary to Iokaste’s assertion, the audience sees no evidence for the god doing his own tracking or speaking in his own voice. [Mpei] And while in this instance Oidipous willingly undertook the duty imposed on him by Delphi, it is clearly proving to be no easy matter for the god to reveal Oidipous to be Laios’ killer. The god seems, then, to require mortal cooperation, which is arranged through the communicative medium of prophecy, but even then to succeed only with difficulty. [Dnc] [Dnp]
