That Oidipous can easily pose more questions, which he does by first seeking to corroborate the location of the fateful intersection, indicates that his own memory provides him with a basis of information from which to work. Iokaste obliges by mentioning that a road leads to the intersection from Delphi. Her description thus coincides with Oidipous’s personal experience of reaching the intersection from Delphi; it does not even require him to reorient himself. Triangulation of the scene of the killing with respect to Delphi, Daulia, and Thebes emphasizes for the audience the link between the geography of these three places and the topography of the prophecies: Delphi where Oidipous received his prophecy, Thebes where Laios presumably received his prophecy proscribing the intercourse that might produce a son, where that son was born, and where he will marry his mother in fulfillment of the prophecy received at Delphi, and the crossroads midway between them where both the key clause of both their prophecies will be realized at once. The fateful meeting occurs at the triangulated mid point dividing the distance between the termini of origin and destination; it is the place of prophetic convergence. There geographic and geometric symmetry describes the arc of prophecy from expression to fulfillment. Having understood the geometry and geography, Oidipous should be able to discover the concordant truth about prophecy. [Mp] [Apcma]
