As the situation is dire, with whom, Oidipous asks, could he better share it than his wife? His rhetorical question has an unintended twist for the audience; he is seeking the comfort of the woman who, because she already shares in his misbegotten family relations, should be the last person with whom he would want to share the sordid facts. Thus the rhetorical question has an ironic truth to it; it invites the audience to consider the appropriateness of their suffering. If this is the god’s perspective, then the god wishes it to be understood that Iokaste and Oidipous share responsibility for their joined fate; they have brought it on themselves. [Gd] [Mpei] [Aj]
