As he says “out of this hand” (ἐκ τῆσδε χειρὸς) the actor playing Oidipous can be supposed to have held up his right hand. The combination of verbal and physical gesture recalls the prophecy just recounted by Iokaste, that Laios would die πρὸς παιδὸς (ll. 713 and 722), which LSJ translates “at the hand of” his child, even though the word “hand” is not explicitly stated. Oidipous’s unintended reference to that prophecy suggests that the god is utilizing both Oidipous’s speech and his bodily movements to communicate the fact that through Oidipous Apollo fulfilled the prophecy. Apollo is using Oidipous’s body and speech now to indicate that he used his body then to effect Laios’ death. [Gd] [Apamu] [Apcmu]
