Here it is surely a god whom the Chorus is addressing as “Wielder of Power,” but as the priest used the same term in to address Oidipous at the play’s opening, it suggests confusion or contradiction about who in fact wields supreme power. To the audience it should be clear that in Thebes, at any rate, the gods wield far more power than even the most powerful mortals.
