Asking whether its addressee “correctly hears” (εἴπερ ὄρθ᾽ ἀκούεις) the title Wielder of Power raises the question, who can and should respond to this appellation, for if a god does now respond, he responds to the same name by which Oidipous was earlier called. This is more than a matter simply of a name; it indicates that the summoner must be clear, whom he or she means to summon. Should the summoner be unclear, as was evidently the case when the play opened, the god may find it inappropriate to respond—may not “correctly hear,” and this may impede the delivery of the aid needed by the mortal petitioner.
