The Chorus’s naming Zeus runs against expectations raised by the audience’s focus on Apollo, signs of whose presence and active intervention are everywhere. The fact that the Chorus is thinking not of him but of Zeus underscores again the problem of assigning appropriate epithets. This shifts the question of correctly attributing powers from the pair mortal-god to the pair god-god. In honoring Zeus the Chorus may perhaps too quickly dismiss Apollo’s power, and failing to grant Apollo the respect that is his due, is it appropriate to appeal to another divine authority?
