Kreon, like Oidipous moments ago, refers to the message he carries as originating directly from Phoebus Apollo himself. This is in keeping with both the myth about Oidipous and the belief on which the Delphic institution is based. If true, it would permit the audience to test the premises of myth and oracle against Kreon’s report. Kreon, however, makes it clear that, in his capcity as an intermediary, he does not pass on the god’s message verbatim, but rather its central points, the “sorts of things” that the god said. Is it Kreon’s place to interpret? What is expected of an embassy to Delphi and how it effects communication between Apollo and the city it represents? [Mip] [Gm]
