With this question Oidipous indicates that he has accepted the substance of Kreon’s report and is now proceeding to act on it by seeking further clarification. He presumes that Kreon has obtained the clarification that he seeks. Thus, either Kreon’s initial statement was incomplete, or it contained only the answer to the first question put to the Pythia, in which case Oidipous’s follow-up questions replicate, not necessarily precisely, the sequence of Kreon’s interview at Delphi. In any event, the dialogue now unfolding before the Athenian audience appears to mimic the sequence of a Delphic consultation, with its transmission of questions from the city to the god via the embassy (Kreon) followed by the transmission of responses from the god via the Pythia, who in turn communicates with the help or mediation of priests, to Kreon and through him back to the city. Considering that such consultation is already at issue in Athens (cf. m71), its enactment on stage presents the audience with an opportunity to examine this practice. [Mip]
