The Corinthian asks nearly the same question as Kreon when he arrived from Delphi bearing the Oracle’s response to his embassy; both men wonder whether the prophecy should be discussed in public. Where the prophecy carried by Kreon pertained directly to Thebes and should have been appropriate for Thebans to hear, the one that presently concerns Oidipous seems to pertain rather to him and his immediate family; perhaps it should not be aired in public. This distinction might have been made in Athens, where it might be argued that the prophecy promising the Spartans victory was delivered to a Spartan embassy and therefore had no business being discussed in the Athenian Assembly.
